History of NetWellness

1994 - U. S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration awards the University of Cincinnati a Telecommunications and Information Infrastructure Assistance Program (TIIAP) grant to create the Ohio Valley Community Health Information Network (OVCHIN), which later became NetWellness. The State of Ohio supports NetWellness with an allocation in the state's biennial operating budget. Over 40 partners join the effort.

1995 - NetWellness goes live on the Web in June, including its first Ask an Expert in Pharmacy and Medications. The first NetWellness public access computers are installed.

1996 - NetWellness concludes its demonstration grant.

1997 - The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University join NetWellness. The State of Ohio increases its support. In partnership with OPLIN (Ohio Public Library Information Network) and the State Library of Ohio, NetWellness begins licensing electronic books and journals for use in all 700 Ohio public libraries.

1998 - NetWellness focuses on developing Ask an Expert as the premier service of its kind on the Web.

1999 - NetWellness 2000, a redesigned site incorporating the needs and suggestions expressed by users, is released. 200 volunteer faculty from the three partner universities have answered about 7000 questions in over 40 topics. Over 1000 expert approved web links cover 80 health topics.

2000 - Nearly 250 volunteer faculty answered 10,000 questions to date in nearly 60 topics.

2001 - NetWellness experts answered 5,834 questions, a 41% increase over 2000. With adam.com's Health Illustrated Encyclopedia NetWellness added 10,000 pages of health content.

2002 - "Ask an Expert" services remained NetWellness' premier feature. A total of 18,696 responses to visitors' questions have been logged from the service's inception in June 1995 through June 2002. Experts in several topics have answered over 1000 questions: diet and nutrition, women's health topics, pharmacy and medications, immunology topics (arthritis, asthma, lupus), ear, nose and throat disorders, and children's health.
