High blood pressure pushes harder than normal against the walls of your arteries causing damage.

  • Some walls get thicker due to cholesterol and fat deposits called plaques.

?Plaques can cause many problems to the arteries, such as:

  • They may take up space in the tube, making it more narrow.
  • They may break off and get stuck in the tube. This can suddenly block the flow of blood to a specific part of the body (for example: a heart attack).

The stretch on the arteries also causes scaring, which makes them more narrow.

  • Less blood can fit through, so less blood reaches the body.
