UC Heart & Vascular Center at the University of Cincinnati is a collaboration of UC physicians, surgeons and researchers providing the most advanced and comprehensive heart, lung and vascular care in the region.
UC has a long tradition of leading the battle against heart and vascular disease, providing patients with a full range of services by a single team, including minimally invasive procedures that pose fewer risks and a shorter recovery time for patients. In keeping with this tradition, the center practices a global approach to patient care and leads the region in heart and vascular disease research and education.
Research is one of the components that make UC unique in the region, and at UC Heart & Vascular Center, the emphasis is on research that directly benefits patients.
For example, anesthesia and cardiology specialists are working together on a protocol to help prevent heart failure in surgery patients.
Oftentimes, patients are unaware they have heart problems and have not received treatment. Surgery, however, stresses the body, so a surgery patient who has a weak heart has a higher chance of suffering a heart attack or other complications. Through this collaboration, patients are checked and scanned for heart problems prior to the procedure. Informal evaluations suggest the approach is already saving lives.
Another example of cutting-edge research is a clinical trial involving the treatment of adult heart disease patients with their own stem cells. Researchers collect bone marrow stem cells from each patient’s blood and inject them into regions of the heart that have insufficient blood flow, the cause of a painful condition called angina.
This 20-center national study and the project to scan for heart problems prior to surgery are but two of many research initiatives currently under way at the center.
UC Heart & Vascular Center physicians serve on the advisory boards and are active volunteers for national organizations such as the American Heart Association, and many contribute to and serve as editors and reviewers for nationally renowned medical journals.
