Question: My mouth was sore and noticed white patches on roof and back of mouth. Dr tested for strep but was negative. The condition remains but now have small red bumps on inside of lower lip and noticed some in the white patches inside my mouth. What is this?
Answer: First off, what did the primary care person who actually observed this problem think?

How long has this been occurring? Is it episodic or chronic?

Are you on any medications? Have you been on antibiotics recently?

Do you smoke?

Canker

Question: I have had a canker sore on my tongue in the exact same place on my tongue for the last three or four years. My dentist doesn`t know what the problem is. I finally made an appointment with a oral surgeon. Is this rare for it to be in the same place?
Answer: If the sore has been present constantly in the same place, that would not be consistent with a diagnosis of aphthous ulcer ("canker sore"), and a biopsy would probably be appropriate. If the sore last 7-10 days, then heals completely, then it could be an aphthous ulcer. Aphthous ulcers infrequently . . .
Ask an Expert: Carl Allen DDS, MSD, Mouth Diseases

Bump On Torus Palatinus-Cancer?

Question: I have been having a few problems with my mouth, starting with 2 small bumps that cam for about a week and left and sever heartburn. However my GP said it was Acid Reflux and gave me prilosec. Those bumps have since shrunk down and only inflame when i eat certain things. However now there is a hard . . .
Answer: Since you do not give a location or exact size for the 2 small bumps, it is difficult to provide any feedback on those. A torus palatinus can grow and change over time.

If a new hard 'bump' has developed, it most likely represents a small growth of new bone that has arisen from the . . .
Ask an Expert: John Kalmar DMD, PhD, Mouth Diseases

Question: I completed my 7 month TB treatment 5 days ago, and I`m going back to Saudi Arabi. But from last 7 months during my treatment period, I feel oral fungus in my middle lips. My question is, is this serious issue or something else?
Answer: I would presume that your treatment regime included a poly pharmacy cocktail of at least Isoniazid and Rifampin (and other anti-microbial agents).

I could not find any current resources that describe concomitant candida infections associated with this therapy, but it may be possible.
Question: Hi, I`ve had white bumps appearing on the inside of my mouth for a few days now. They are small but raised enough where I can bite some off with my teeth. They don`t appear to be in any particular cluster or pattern. They don`t hurt particularly much but I can say some have been mildly uncomfortable . . .
Answer: Have you had this problem evaluated by your primary care provider? Do you have a fever or any other sign or symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, cough, nausea or vomiting, malaise?

I also think you mean Pharyngeal tonsils not lingual tonsils as the lingual tonsils . . .
Ask an Expert: Richard Jurevic DDS, PhD, Mouth Diseases

Question: I have a recurring problem with burning mouth pain. I had this problem about 6 to 7 years ago and the Clonazepam finally made the pain dormant.

Answer: Based on what you are telling me, this may be a condition known as burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Even though it's called BMS, it really should be called "oral sensory neuropathy," which means that the nerves that transmit information to the brain about the sensations in the mouth just aren't working . . .
Ask an Expert: Carl Allen DDS, MSD, Mouth Diseases
