Overview

Schizophrenia is a major mental illness, a brain disease that can affect many different parts of a person's life. About 1% of the US population, or 1 person in 100, has schizophrenia. The disorder usually starts when people are in late adolescence or young adulthood, although it can begin at other times of life. People who suffer from schizophrenia have changes in the ways that they perceive reality, changes in the way that they reason, and changes in their emotions. These changes result in significant disabilities; resulting in difficulties with family relationships, education, work, and taking care of themselves.
