Osteoporosis and Calcium Paradox

08/25/1999

Question:

I know this may be asking a bit much of you, but this article proposes some very controversial items related to dairy and calcium. Would you mind giving me(us) your thoughts on whether this is mostly false claims or facts...Thanks

I am concerned about dairy comsumption, since I currently choose to eat very little dairy.

Answer:

The article you sent covers a number of articles I have read in the past. There is definitely some controversy around the subject of calcium. In my opinion it illustrates how complex the area of nutrition is. At the present time we do not have the answer to the calcium question. One can find articles that say calcium intake does not correlate with fracture rate (Cummings, S. R., M. C. Nevitt, et al. (1995). "Risk factors for hip fracture in white women." New England Journal of Medicine 332(12): 767-773) Many experts would say that since calcium has few side effects and may be beneficial, it is probably worth taking. The Food and Nutrition Board decided that there was insufficient data to make a "Recommended Dietary Allowance" for calcium, so they chose to propose an "Adequate Intake" instead. Despite the lack of data, their recommendations are similar to those of the past. Whether we need more calcium in this country to offset other problems with our diet is not clear. Calcium remains an interesting area of research.
