Poison ivy treatments

06/27/1999

Question:

I`ve heard that hydrocortisone is not very effective for poison ivy because it cannot effectively penetrate blisters. Is calamine or Domeboro a better choice?

Answer:

The treatment for poison ivy depends upon the severity of the condition. The most problematic symptom is often the itching. The use of calamine is intended to dry up the areas to thereby help the itching. Hydrocortisone available over the counter contains a low level of medication. In cases of more severe poison ivy, this may not be sufficiently potent to be effective. A physician will prescribe a treatment depending upon the severity. Often, it is necessary to try several remedies, including hydrocortisone and the others you mentioned, in order to determine which provides the greatest relief.
