Osteoporosis

Calcitonin Information

10/22/1999

Question:

What is calcitonin? Is it necessary to take 50,000 IU of Vitamin D 3Xweek with Miacalcin. I thought calcitonin was calcium. Now I am not sure. Also taking Premarin.

Answer:

Calcitonin is a hormone secreted by special cells in the thyroid gland. It affects bone metabolism, but it has no calcium in it. Thus, it is definitely advisable to be sure you get the recommended amount of calcium and vitamin D. There are many ways to take vitamin D. Vitamin D capsules are generally 400-800 IU/day. Another method is 10,000-50,000 IU/month intramuscularly. The dose may vary from person to person. Please check with your physician
