Tell me all you can about `chiggers`!

01/24/2000

Question:

My father-in-law has "chiggers". I think I have spelled it correctly. We would like more information on this topic--How you get it, How long they last, What the best cure for them is??? Any info. you could send us would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:

Chiggers are bites. They commonly occur on the exposed skin of individuals who have walked through fields with grass and weeds. The insects bite, fall off and leave the individual with a very itchy rash, often blisters. They are not dangerous but a nuisance. Usually the treatment is Caladryl for relief of itch. Oral prednisone can be used if the itch is unbearable. Chiggers must be distinguished from jiggers (tunga penetrans) that occurs in other parts of the world like Africa.
