Eating Disorder Causes/Treatment

04/08/1998

Question:

My question is about the causes and treatment of the eating disorder Bulimia. I have done much reading about the symptons and characteristics of the disease but what about causes? Is it caused by life stress, chemical imbalances, environment? Is it typically treated with medicine or psychiatric therapy? How long is the treatment period/process?

Answer:

It is unclear whether there is any one cause of an eating disorder. There are a multiplicity of factors which might increase one's risk for an eating disorder including psychological, life stress, personality and possibly biochemical. Treatments for eating disorders are also multifaceted and are best approached by a team of health care professionals. If you suspect that you or a significant other has an eating disorder, please seek immediate and confidential help. Call any of your local nutrition or dairy councils or medical facilities to recieve a confidential referral in your area. I know of many individuals who have overcome eating disorders so keep the faith and pursue help. Keep in touch.
