Herpes? cold sores?

10/21/1999

Question:

Can herpes be spread through oral sex if an indivdual has a cold sore on their mouth? What is the difference between cold sores and genital herpes?

Answer:

Yes, herpes can be spread from a person with a cold sore who is performing oral sex to the genital area of another person. "Cold Sores" usually refers to Herpes simplex I infection, and "Genital Herpes" usually refers to Herpes simplex II infection -- they seem to prefer these different areas of the body. However, things do get mixed up sometimes when mouths and genital areas come into contact.
