Mouth Diseases |
Thrush01/06/2000 |
my boyfriend just recently recovered from an extreme case of thrush. my question is can a person contact this disease from wet kissing?
Thrush is another name for an infection by yeast-like fungal organisms, especially ones with the scientific name of Candida albicans. It is easily the most common fungal infection of the mouth in humans. In fact, Candida albicans may be found in the mouths of healthy individuals without producing any signs of disease. An extreme or severe case of thrush could be due to many complicated factors, including lowered immunity, introduction of a particularly potent strain of the thrush organism or presence of other microbes that may help the thrush "bug" multiply.
Since the mouth is a warm, moist environment that contains hundreds of different microorganisms, including Candida albicans, it is likely that wet kissing would transmit some of these "bugs" from one person to another. But, just like with colds and other infections, such exposure doesn`t necessarily mean a person will contract disease.
The bottom line answer would be yes, but not necessarily. Thrush is not usually considered a highly transmissible disease, but severe thrush infections should be treated with caution for the good of both the patient and those with whom he/she may enjoy wet kissing.
