Question:

What is the effect of smoking on a pregnant woman and her unborn baby?

Answer:

The effects on the pregnant woman are many. Besides the usual risks of smoking, the woman also has an increased chance of miscarriage and an increased chance of going into preterm labor, thus delivering a premature infant.

The risks to her unborn child include: 1) intrauterine growth retardation due to less oxygen available in the bloodstream for the mother to supply to her fetus and therefore, low birth weight of her baby once it is born, 2) premature birth, also frequently resulting in a low birth weight infant, and 3) an increased risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) to her baby in its first year of life.
