Digestive Disorders

Is my pain diet/Gall Bladder related?

02/01/2000

Question:

Periodically I get a random pain in my right side, right under my last rib that gets so intense I can barely breath, and it travels around to my back, piercing back and forth. Can this be related to gall bladder problems, diet, etc?

Answer:

Biliary colic is a term used to describe pain from the gallbladder caused by transient blockage by gallstones of the small duct that drains the gallbladder. This pain can be severe, is intermittent, and usually lasts from 30 minutes to several hours. It is usually located either in the center of the abdomen above the umbilicus or in the location you describe. The pain can radiate to the back and is usually brought on by meals. You should seek consultation with your physician if you are concerned that your symptoms are from the gallbladder. A simple ultrasound x-ray is usually the only test needed to confirm the presence of gallstones.
