Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Sjogren`s syndrome

02/08/2000

Question:

What is Sjogren`s syndrome?

Answer:

Sjogren`s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that involves primarily the exocrine glands. It is characterized by dry mouth (major symptom) and dry eyes, and an autoimmune connective tissue disease. The latter is most often rheumatoid arthritis. The presence of dry eyes and dry mouth alone without arthritis is referred to as sicca syndrome. There are certainly many other things that can lead to dry mouth, and these must be ruled out before a diagnosis of Sjogren`s is made.

The diagnosis can be difficult. There are a number of blood studies that are suggestive. Histopathologic examination of a minor salivary gland obtained through a small biopsy of the lower lip is currently the most widely accepted diagnostic procedure.
