Smoking and Tobacco

Skoal/Copenhagen Use

07/18/1997

Question:

What is the best method to stop dipping Skoal or Copenhagen? I've tried to stop cold turkey and it only lasts for several weeks. I need a long term solution to the problem.

Answer:

"Cold turkey" is an excellent method of dealing with the nicotine habit/addiction. Usually the first two weeks of abstaining from nicotine are the most difficult in terms of withdrawal symptoms. As time passes, the urge to resume use of nicotine wanes but never totally disappears. Those persons most successful of long-term abstention of nicotine are persons who have been able to substitute healthy life-style changes such as a balanced diet, regular exercise and rest, and stress management into their daily living.
