Herpes Help

03/14/2000

Question:

Seeking information on different types of herpes and how it can be transmitted?

Answer:

There are several types of Herpes viruses. These include: Herpes simplex type 1 and 2, Varicella-Zoster virus (also called Herpes zoster), Human Herpes virus 6, 7 and 8, and Herpes B virus.

Herpes simplex can be transmitted by contact with affected mucosa (usually oral in the case of type 1 and genital in the case of type 2). Varicella-zoster virus appears to be transmitted through respiratory secretions. Human Herpes virus 6 and 7 are thought to be transmitted through saliva during childhood. Human Herpes virus 8 appears to be transmitted sexually. Finally, Herpes B virus is acquired by people who handle macaque monkeys who carry the infection.
