Tanning

02/25/2000 12:06PM

Question:

Which way of tanning is the safest? Tanning-beds, Self-tanners, or natural sun-bathing?

Answer:

The only way of tanning that is safe is the use of a self tanning product. All tanning beds cause the same type of damage as the sun. Tanning beds and the sun expose the skin to ultraviolet radiation. The tan that occurs is the skin`s response to protect itself. The pigment, called melanin, moves up into the top portion of the skin to protect the skin cell DNA from being destroyed. The UV radiation damages the tissues in the skin, causing collagen and elastin to break down. Eventually wrinkles are formed. In addition, sun or tanning bed UV exposure can cause skin cancer. The skin care industry is hard at work to come up with better self tanning products because people feel better when their skin has a "tanned" appearance. Hopefully, developments will continue.
