Arthritis and Rheumatism

Tendonitus

04/05/2000

Question:

What is tendonitis? What causes it. What helps it?

Answer:

Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons. It is usually associated with pain, tenderness and swelling at the site of involvement. The cause of tendinitis depends on which tendon is involved. In general, mechanical damage, degeneration, or inflammation cause tendinitis at various sites. Achilles tendinitis, for example, results from trauma, athletic overactivity, improperly fitting shoes, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout and calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease. Several conservative measures, such as rest, shoe correction, gentle stretching, and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as naproxen, and ibuprofen) can help. Rotator cuff tendinitis (shoulder) can be helped by corticosteroid injections. These injections, however, should not be given to some one who has Achilles tendinitis.
