Emphysema Relief

04/20/1998

Question:

Is there any truth to the rumor that hydrogen peroxide IV's will relieve the effects of emphysema?

Answer:

Hydrogen peroxide therapy is a form of alternative/complementary medicine thought to be effective due to the extra oxygen that it can deliver to the body. It is also thought to help stimulate the immune system. Hydrogen peroxide can be found naturally in raw fruits and vegetables. The over-the-counter peroxide used on cuts is a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. Any solution stronger than this is toxic to the skin and deadly if taken internally. There are no scientific studies that show positive effects of hydrogen peroxide use outside of cleansing of the skin.
