Smoking and Tobacco

Menthol cigarettes= sterility?

04/10/2000

Question:

Does smoking menthol cigarettes make you sterile (unable to have kids)?

Answer:

While there are studies of cigarette smoking and its effect on sperm and fertility, there are no studies focusing on only menthol cigarettes and sterility. Smoking has been identified as affecting sperm maturation and having a detrimental effect on sperm fertilizing potentials, in animal studies. In a population study, cigarette smoking by both members of a couple was found to be related to decreased fertility when this factor was considered by itself. However, when other factors were included in the analysis this effect was decreased. This may suggest that there is a relationship between cigarette smoking and other factors that affect fertility. These are studies of groups of participants and cannot necessarily be applied to every smoker. However, men with marginal semen quality who wish to have children may benefit from quitting smoking.
