How does menopause effect lupus

04/26/2000

Question:

how does menopause effect lupus

Answer:

Flares or increase in lupus symptoms decrease after menopause. Clinical studies suggest that the frequency and proportion of postmenopausal flares also dropped significantly. This suggest that the low estrogen environment in menopause may be protective against lupus flares. (Mok CC; Lau CS; Ho CT; Wong RW: Do flares of systemic lupus erythematosus decline after menopause? Scand J Rheumatol 1999; 28: 357-362) In contrast, menopausal women on estrogen replacement therapy seem to have a nearly three-fold increase in automimuune diseases such as lupus if the disease is active when estrogen therapy is begun. (Barrett-Connor: Postmenopausal estrogen therapy and selected (less-often-considered) disease outcomes. Menopause 1999 6:14-20.) The definitive data however is still not known (Review article: Buyon JP: Hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women with systemic lupus erythematosus. J Am Med Womens Assoc 1998 53:13-17.) Hope this helps.
