Videoscopic Volume Reduction Surgery

06/16/1998

Question:

After being told that you are not a candidate for LVRS is there still a chance that you might be a candidate for videoscopic volume reduction surgery? If so, I would appreciate a list of top surgeons in the Tennesse area or surrounding states that are performing this surgery.

Answer:

LVRS/VVRS is used for end-stage emphysema. There are strict criteria for determining who will benefit from this procedure.

Please check the links below for additional information. The link titled "National Emphysema Treatment Trial" lists the 18 sites in the United States that are performing this surgery under a grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and Health Care Financing Agency (HCFA)to determine its' effectiveness.
