Dental Sealants

05/03/2000

Question:

What are dental sealants made of ?

Answer:

Most dental sealants are epoxy resin-based plastics. The most common resin used in sealants is bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (BIS-GMA). Some sealants also contain urethane dimethacrylate. Other monomers are added to sealants to decrease their viscosity which enhances their "flowability". Inorganic fillers are added in some cases to provide more resistance to wear and in other cases to release fluoride ions. The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs has approved a number of commercially available sealants which meet establised performance standards. (Click on the link below.)
