Chronic Bronchitis

05/17/2000

Question:

I have chronic sinusitis, have seen at least fifteen doctors and specialists, had surgery ,taken at least 3000 antibiotic tabs up to omnicef, had allergy tests/shots. I take rhinocort, flovent, proventil, and guaifenisen the latter giving me indigestion. I get through 10 days of antibiotic therapy only to go through same cycle thee weeks later time after time all years. The scariest thing is the bronchitis. Many years ago ammonium chloride tabs broke the bronchits up in 24 hrs. Its no longer available...Please help! My asthma tests show a 24% loss of lg & sm airways. For info I have lg amts of thick mucous both clear and yellow. I`d appreciate any help.

Answer:

The problem you have is complicated if you have had that much difficulty with recurrent sinusitis. You certainly should have a good evaluation for possible immunodeficiency. This could be done by a board certified allergist/immunologist. The "bronchitis" problem would have to be evaluated by someone who knows how to interpret pulmonary function tests. Just on the information you provided, it is not possible to tell whether you have asthma or chronic bronchitis. This would have to be determined by a doctor with knowledge about how to make this differential diagnosis. Special lungs tests might be necessary. These would include chest x-ray and more complete pulmonary function tests before and after bronchodilators.
