High sed rate

06/19/2000

Question:

What is high sed rate?

Answer:

The sed rate (or ESR) is a blood test which measures inflammation. It cannot diagnose any particular disease but does suggest the category of problem that a patient may have. A normal value is anything less than 20 or possibly 30 in older individuals. A "high sed rate" would be any value greater than that.

The sed rate is also of use in monitoring response to therapy in those conditions in which it has been elevated.

In general, it is used as a screening test and is moderately useful in this regard.
