Jaw pain from alcohol

06/06/2000

Question:

Sometimes when I drink alcoholic beverages (mainly red wine) I get a sharp pain at the back of my jaw right under my ear. What is the cause? It feels like the over tightening of a muscle.

Answer:

An individuals reaction to different foods and beverages can be quite individual and unique. It appears that you are not responding well to the intake of red wine. While I am not certain your reaction is a muscle tightening, you do have muscles in the jaw area that could be reacting. I would suggest you talk to your dentist about your reaction for more specific feedback on your individual response. Thanks for your question.
