Scalp disorder in minorities

06/15/2000

Question:

What is the most efficacious treatment for a scalp disorder that appears to resemble acne vulgaris and has a predominance in the African American population I think the name is Capita decalvans, and also what is the causal factor

Answer:

The cause of the condition "folliculitis decalvans" is unknown. Treatment is difficult and may consist of multiple topical and oral therapies including steroids, Accutane, Dapsone, Plaquenil and others. The therapies have potential serious side effects and should be prescribed by those experienced in both folliculitis decalvans and the use of the medications. Although there is no cure for the condition, it often can be moderately well controlled.
