Breast Cancer

Bone Scan

06/26/2000

Question:

My 39 year old daughter was discovered to have a lump in her breast. The MD has ordered a bone scan in addition to a mammography. Why the bone scan? Why not just biopsy the lump?

Answer:

I cannot answer for your daughter`s physician. Often, when a lump is found in the breast, an ultrasound follows the mammogram for more information about the lump. Only a biopsy is a definitive test to determine if a lump is malignant or not. Your daughter needs clarification of the name of the test, why it is done, and what it will tell the doctor. Encourage her to ask questions about everything that is being ordered. Thank you for writing.
