Cavities over rule again06/30/2000 |
My seven year old daughter has two teeth that are pretty much cavity holes. They are baby teeth and they will come out. My oldest daughter had the same thing and she had space mintainers put in and they have done nothing but cause trouble. One fell out. Should I do this again with my seven year old, and take a chance of going through the same problems, or just have them pulled? Fillings are out of the question. They are too far gone. Could lack of calcium cause this? All of her other teeth are fine and she brushes regularly.
Baby (primary) back (posterior) teeth are important to hold space for the permanent teeth to follow, usually around age 10 - 12. There is great variation from child to child, however, regarding the need to hold space if the baby teeth come out early. Important considerations include exactly which teeth are missing, how big the permanent teeth are, how much space is present now, how early the baby teeth are lost, the child`s overall oral health and tooth-cleaning habits. While space maintainers are sometimes difficult to manage they usually work well with few problems. In many cases they can prevent more complicated crowding problems later. Your child`s specific situation should be assessed by a dentist who is experienced and knowledgeable in treating children. The causes of dental decay are more complicated than we used to believe, but lack of calcium in the child`s diet is not involved. Important factors include the types of bacteria in the child`s mouth, diet, availablity of fluoride, tooth cleaning habits and quality and quantity of saliva. Pediatric dentists specialize in the care of children and one could provide you with a great deal of information about your child`s space maintenance and decay problems.
