Bursitis of the Hip

07/27/2000

Question:

Hello! Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. I was diagnosed in jan 2000 with a heel spur (x-rays concur) and pf. I seem to have gotten over that, but during the healing process my right foot has been landing differently and seems to be awakening pain in my right hip. My doctor referred my to a physical therapist. The PT has found a lot of trigger points in that right hip and they run down my right leg. She thinks it is bursitis of the right hip and wants me to get a cortisone shot. Would the shot help to heel the bursitis? What does heel bursitis? I would prefer not to have the shot.

Answer:

Bursitis about the hip is usually trochanteric bursitis which is on the side or lateral aspect of the hip. A bursa is an area of tissue that inflames with acute or repetitive trauma. A steroid injection into a bursa will help to relieve a lot of the inflammation in the bursa and, thus, treat and correct the problem. It is a relatively simple injection.
