ANA & ESR

08/02/2000

Question:

I had ANA test and it was negative, but does not say at what tiers.Usually at what tiers (20;40;80;160;320) is ANA test negative or positive in 45 year old males? Also would having taken antibiotics for a month for sinus infection have any effect on ESR blood test result? ESR blood test was done two weeks after having stopped taking antibiotics. Is ESR blood test result going to be(falsely) higher or lower?Thank you.

Answer:

There are no titers with a negative ANA. Titers are performed with positive ANAs to determine the concentration of anti-nuclear antibodies (ANAs) If the ESR was elevated because of the sinus infection, the antibiotics could have resulted in a normalization of this test but not an elevation.
