Ringworm

08/11/2000

Question:

What do you suggest for treatment of ringworm with a bright red ring around the outside of the infected area.

Answer:

"Ringworm" can present in many fashions. One is a round scaling ring shaped rash of variable size with no active rash in the center. However, other rashes, such as eczema, can present similarly. Try over-the-counter ringworm medicines (ask your pharmacist for brands available in their store). If these don`t work, see your dermatologist for a "scrape" test (scale is scraped from the skin and evaluated in the office under a microscope) which takes only 5 minutes. This will either confirm ringworm or disprove. It can then be treated appropriately.
