Myoclonic Seizures08/03/2000 |
Could you please explain what myoclonic jerks are. Are they the same as myoclonic seizures? I can`t find any information about them except two small articles here. Thanks
Myoclonic jerks (or myoclonus) consist of sudden, brief jerks, usually of an arm or leg. It occurs when there is sudden and involuntary muscle contractions. Myoclonus may also affect other muscles such as face muscles. Myoclonic seizures are only one type of myoclonus and occurs from an electrical discharge in the brain. These seizures usually occur as part of an epilepsy syndrome that also has grand mal seizures. Treatment consists of seizure medications. Non-epileptic myoclonus may occur from abnormalities in the brain or spinal cord. The treatment is different than epilepsy.
