Arthritis and Rheumatism

Positive hla-b27

08/11/2000

Question:

i`m 35 years old, female with a strong family history(mother) of psorasis. mom is severe, including in the bones. 1 year ago, i started with mild big toe pain which continually got worse. pcp treated it as arthritis. he recently took blood tests which revealed a positive hla-b27. now, i`m scared! especially with the history. rh factor negative.(yeh). he has referred me to a rheumatologist. any recommendations? also, is this bad news for my future?

Answer:

Just being HLA B27 positive does not automatically imply that you will get a rheumatic disease, you might never get it; first degree relatives of patients with conditions which are HLA B27 related (for Example: Ankylosing spondylitis) are more prone than the regular population to get one of the conditions. Do not be scared, just if you get symptoms: back pain and stiffness, swollen fingers or toes, heel pain, eye inflammation, painful swollen joints, go see a rheumatologist.
