Reactivating MONO

09/14/2000

Question:

What types of situations can reactivate EBV initially a case of mono? My grandson diagnosed in July, seemed to be getting better, but now is suffering from fatigue again. During this period he cracked his growth plate in his knee. Would this cause it to reoccur? What is prognosis?

Answer:

Infectious mononucleosis is typically a self-limited disease. Occasionally, this infection may be followed by malaise or fatigue that lasts weeks. However, chronic active infection is very rare in otherwise healthy individuals. Patients with disorders of the immune system may develop complications caused by persistent infection.
