Diagnosis and Cure for Prostate Cancer

09/20/2000

Question:

How is prostate cancer diagnosed? Is it true there is no actual cure for it?

Answer:

Prostate cancer is usually diagnosed when a patient has an abnormal blood test (PSA) and/ or an abnormal digital rectal examination revealing a nodule or irregularity of the prostate. A biopsy is then performed to determine if cancer is present. When detected early and treated appropriately, patients with prostate cancer can be cured of their disease. In fact, most patients with the disease fall into this category. A cure is related to the general health and age of the patient, in addition to the extent of the cancer when the diagnosis is made.
