Will i have teeth in the long run?

09/26/2000

Question:

Since i have a cavity in almost every tooth in my mouth, will i have any teeth by the time i`m old? will they last?

Answer:

You give me little information on which to base a decision. However, teeth that are taken care of by regular brushing and flossing, use of topical fluoride and fluoridated water, as well as regular dental visits for checkups and cleaning will last a lifetime of 80+ years. This assumes the teeth are reasonably straight and the bite is good, diet is good, and there is no disease or trauma that harms the teeth.

You say you have a cavity in every tooth. That seems to show that your brushing and flossing and perhaps your diet are not as good as they should be. Perhaps you have missed some regular check up dental visits. I have no way of knowing how big your cavities are and that would make a possible difference in how long you can have your teeth. Often people lose teeth from gum disease rather than decay.

In summary, I have too little information on which to base a decision about how long you can expect your teeth to last. But if you take care of them they will last a long time.
