Losing Weight While Breast-Feeding
I have read in many books that breast-feeding contributes to losing some of the weight that was gained during preganacy. How is this so?
During pregnancy, the woman with a typical weight gain of 25-35 pounds will add 5 to 10 pounds of weight as maternal stores. During breast feeding the body uses approximately 2700 calories per day or 500 calories more than a non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding woman uses. The average woman will consume between 2200 and 2600 calories. The difference between the calories taken in and those needed by the body will result in a slow and very gradual weight loss.
