Digestive Disorders

Pain in my stomach

11/21/2000

Question:

What could be the reason for pain located in the upper left part of the abdomen just below the rib cage after eating a rich meal? Could it be gall stones or is it a gall bladder attack? It happens infrequently-is it warranted to get it checked out?

Answer:

The gallbladder is anatomically located below the liver which is under the rib cage on the right side of the upper abdomen (not the left). Pain from the gallbladder almost always is located in that area or directly in the middle part of the upper abdomen. Potential sources of pain at the location you describe (upper left) include the stomach (ie. ulcer), pancreas (ie. pancreatitis), and spleen. Pancreatitis is precipitated by fatty meals - usually the pain is severe, lasts several hours, is associated with vomiting, and radiates to the back. Depending how often is meant by "infrequently", you might consider getting this symptom checked out.
