Burning tongue

12/24/2000 07:26PM

Question:

what causes a burning tongue?

Answer:

Most people with a burning sensation of the tongue have a condition called burning mouth syndrome. This probably is a minor nerve disorder in which the nerves send back incorrect messages to the brain, telling it that the tongue is scalded, when in fact everything is fine otherwise. Other nerves in the area are also often affected, so unusual tastes may be present, or unusual textures or dryness may be perceived. Unfortunately, there is no medically proven treatment for this condition, and none of the so-called "cures" for burning tongue have been shown to be any better than placebo ("sugar pill"). The good news is that, for half of the people who get this problem, it goes away by itself eventually.

Much less frequently, burning tongue symptoms may be caused by oral yeast infection or certain rare types of anemia.
