C.O.P.D. end stages and life expectancy

Question:

My mom was diagnosed with C.O.P.D. A year and a half ago she had lung reduction surgery and has since been in and out of the hospital with various bacterial infections. The doctor told me last night that she has end stage C.O.P.D. What does that mean and what does it mean in terms of life expectancy?
