Muscle spasm following hemorrhoid surgery

01/16/2001

Question:

After having internal hemorrhoid surgery over a month ago, I have been experiencing muscle spasms in that area following every bowel movement. I have been treated with muscle relaxants (Carisopr/ASA 200-325)2x daily and have had a numbing injection in the site. So far no relief. Is there any hope?

Answer:

This question should really be answered by a general or colorectal surgeon. Symptoms that occur immediately after an operation are generally assessed by the surgeon and not by other physicians. You also did not mention what type of surgery you had for the hemorrhoids (there are several options) and what the doctor who performed the operation thinks is the cause of the spasms. If you find a surgeon to answer your question please include that information.
