Anxiety and Stress Disorders (Children)

Effects of Risperidone

02/01/2001

Question:

Shoud I give risperidone to my child for anxiety?

Answer:

Risperidone has been used clinically to treat a number of behavioral conditions by pediatricians and child psychiatrists. This medication is in the class of major tranquilizers but is far more selective with reportedly fewer side effects than older drugs in the class. Though the drug is widely used in children and adolescents, extensive safety and efficacy testing has not been done in this population. Use of this medication should be under the supervision of a physician familiar with it`s use, risks, and benefits.
