Menopause

Formication during Perimenopause

03/01/2001

Question:

How do I deal with Formication during Perimenopause short of taking estrogen? I`ve heard that Vitamin B6 can help? Antihistamines don`t help. Thanks.

Answer:

Formication, the sensation of creeping and crawling on the skin (from the Latin word, formica, for `ant`), was listed on one of the original menopause symptoms questionnaires, the Kupperman Index. It is one of the less common symptoms, and perhaps one of the more difficult to treat. Estrogen and antihistamines have been mentioned as treatments, but I know of no scientific studies supporting those recommendations.
