Medication for Young People with ADD09/08/1998 |
When should I consider medication for my 7 year old daughter with ADD?
Even children younger than seven may appropriately be prescribed medication for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Of course, this is a decision that is not made lightly and needs the input of persons who are very familiar with ADD/ADHD and the use of medication in small children. We know of no chronic side effects from medicating approriate children at this age, and the benefits to self-esteem can be excellent. On the other hand, without appropriate behavioral modification (both on the part of the child and the adults interacting with him/her), medication will only go so far. Speak with your physician about your child's specific case.
