Anxiety and Stress Disorders (Children)

Medications for Social Anxiety

What are all the medicication to treat social anxiety?

Most of the useful agents for treating childhood anxiety, happen to be antidepressants as well. Medications with known effectiveness in children with anxiety include paroxetine (Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and imipramine. Agents which are not typically used in children but which can be helpful if given for short periods of time are benzodiazepines such as Xanax. Most of these agents take 2-4 weeks to have any effect at all and require at least 8 weeks to have full effect. All of these agents have a wide safety margin and are easy to use for both generalists and specialists in this area.
