Dear Dr I am a 25 yr old female. I have had a yeast infection since Febuary which spread to my throat and intestines in March. I have seen the gynecologist who has put me on a course of diflucan. However I have done some research and believ I may have a general candida albicans condition. I was on the contraceptive pill but have since come off it - the imbalance in the endicrone system being a factor in yeast infection. However the only thing which seems to make a difference is sticking to a non-yeast non-sugar diet. I am consulting a nutritionist who suggested posting questions on this website. When I come off the diet my symptoms return and worsen. I have noticed a difference in my ability to digest food and an increase in food allergy since coming to the USA - I am Scottish and came in Sept 99. I have developed an allergy to eggs. Have you had or know of anyone who has had a connection between food allergy and candida. I know the pesticides and preservatives (in beer as well as food) are different here from the UK and I was wondering if there could be a connection. I have currently changed to eating only organic produce. Thank you for your help and time.
A propensity to candida infection can be caused by immunosuppression caused by chronic illness or being on certain types of medications (such as corticosteroids). There is also a rare condition of selective immune deficiency to candida albicans. This can be evaluated by an experienced allergist/immunologist who can evaluate these problems with skin testing or with specialized laboratory testing.
