Affects of secondhand smoke to the Heart10/31/2001 |
How does secondhand smoke affect the heart? How does it affect/cause strokes?
Both smoking cigarettes or inhaling cigarette smoke of others cause increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Smoke inhalation causes hardening of the arteries in the heart and brain, as well as making platelets `stickier` and more likely to form clots in heart and brain arteries.
