What are the primary differences, both in effectiveness and in side effects, of the major osteoporsosis drugs? (fosamax, actonel, evista)
Evista is a drug approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. It has some similarities to estrogen in that it helps preserve bone. It also causes a small increase in blood clots in the legs and lungs the way estrogen does. Unlike estrogen it does not affect the breast or uterus. Actonel and Fosamax are drugs approved to prevent and treat osteoporosis. They must be taken in a specific way: first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, do not eat or drink anything for one-half hour and do not lie down. They have been shown to prevent both spine and hip fractures.
